Wiveton Hall
is one of north Norfolk's
secret architectural gems. It is an impressive, flint-faced, Dutch-gabled
hall built in the 17th century by a prosperous merchant on what had been
monastic land. At that time the sea came almost up to the doorstep and
nearby Blakeney and Cley were thriving ports.
-
Accommodation:
In the Edwardian period a
Jacobean-style wing was added to provide the then essential billiard room,
ball room and gun room - rooms which have since been converted into
wonderfully spacious living accommodation. It is this self-contained
wing (facing you in the photo above) with its own entrances, that is
available to rent. It sleeps eight, including one bedroom with a
four-poster bed, but extra bedrooms may also be available. The wing is
furnished throughout with the kind of family furniture and pictures
traditional in a country house. It has its own sunny, private, walled
garden, beyond which you can wander in the estate, or across the famous
Cley marshes to the sea.
